Marking Loy Krathong 2024 in Pattaya
Loy Krathong is amongst the most auspicious dates on the Thai calendar, and this year falls on the 15th of November. Families will gather and mark the occasion by launching a Krathong (a small floatable basket made of leaves containing flowers, incense, candles, a traditional Thai food item, and a bodily product such as hair or fingernail) into a body of water near where they are at the time. The festival's origins can be traced back to ancient times and are said to originate from the Hindu festival of Diwali (Festival of Light), and thus connected to Buddhism. The Thai people worship and ask for forgiveness from the Goddess of water Ganga, and pray to have their troubles washed away. The Loy Krathong Festival is not just a religious event; it is also a time for family and friends to spend quality time with one another and enjoy a visual extravaganza with a plethora of Krathongs creating a sea of lights as they float and gently glide across the water.
Although the festival will be marked in all parts of Pattaya City, a major event is planned for the evening of the 15th of November on Pattaya Central Beach. There will be plenty of vendors selling handcrafted Krathongs and, of course, the party atmosphere that Pattaya is famed for.
