Pratunam Songkran Celebration: Khao San Road

Songkran is the name of Thailand’s New Year celebration. With the Thai calendar, the new year falls between April 13-15 every year. For these few days out the year, Thailand transforms into a countrywide party. The meaning behind Songkran is to be a time of cleansing the old and asking for new blessings for the new year. Water has always been a significant part of the Songkran holiday. At first, it was used ceremoniously with elder family members. Now, water is used more in a fun way with cities and villages becoming filled with playful water fights.

There are a few ways to celebrate Songkran. Locals celebrate a bit differently than people who are just visiting. Thais will often return to their hometown to spend the holiday with their families. Bangkok is Thailand’s largest city and you’ll barely notice anybody gone for the holiday. Visitors are more than welcome to take part in the water activities that start for the Songkran festival.
