Thai people look forward to National Children’s Day every year as a fun and festive celebration that reaches cities, towns, and villages in every corner of the country. Established in 1955, Children’s Day takes place on the second Saturday of January. It is a public holiday, which gives children and families the opportunity to celebrate at local events held in their neighborhoods.
Known as “Wan Dek” in Thai, National Children’s Day is organized by a special committee in coordination with authorities like the Red Cross, various Thai Government organizations, civic organizations, and businesses. As a visitor, a resident, or a true Bangkok local, you and your family are welcome to participate at one of the dozens of events around the city!
The Silom neighborhood hosts several special events to entertain and educate children about their important role as the future of our society. The Government House and Parliament House, both in the Dusit area, open their doors for special guided tours for children and families. This is a unique opportunity for children to learn about civic affairs and their possibilities as future leaders.
Make a day of the festivities by taking your children on a tour of the nearby historic district of Bangkok. From the Parliament house, you can walk or take a short taxi or tuk-tuk ride to the banks of the Chao Phraya river. From there, a ferry can take you along the scenic waterway, which showcases Bangkok’s modern skyline as well as many sacred wats. Stop at the Tha Chang or Tha Tien piers to walk to the Royal Palace, which is open for educational tours all year round.
Cross the river again to visit Iconsiam, Bangkok’s premier entertainment and shopping venue in the old city. Children will love the interactive floating museum on the river as well as the many interactive shops and displays within the massive complex.
We hope you take this opportunity to enjoy Wan Dek as a celebration of the immense potential that children hold for our future, and our role in supporting them to learn and grow. The child-oriented activities are sure to leave a lasting impression and make memories your children will cherish. Happy Children’s Day!
