Thai people look forward to National Children’s Day — known as “Wan Dek” in Thai — as a country-wide celebration that brings special festivities to their neighborhoods, towns, and villages. Children’s Day has been celebrated in Thailand since 1955, with a public holiday declared for the second Saturday of January. This special day gives families the opportunity to come together to celebrate the important role that children hold in our society.
If you are in Bangkok for National Children’s Day, you are in luck! A national committee coordinates events with authorities like the Red Cross, various Thai Government organizations, civic organizations, and businesses. As a visitor, you and your family are welcome to participate at one of the many events close to us in the Thong Lo neighborhood.
Take your children out for a day of play at Kidzoona and Molly Fantasy, a play center geared towards younger children at Gateway Ekkamai just outside the Ekkamai BTS station. Ball pits, bouncy areas, games, a carousel, and more await you for an energetic day of play.
While you are in the area, check out Snow Town also at Gateway Ekkamai. Everyone in the family will enjoy the winter wonderland full of activities — sledding, skiing, and snowball fights. When you’re done playing in the snow, you can always head back out into the sun :)
Bangkok Planetarium is another excellent choice for a Children’s Day excursion. Displays are accessible in English and children will love the interactive elements of the Planetarium as they discover space.
If you are looking for even more options, take a taxi to Dusit to the Thai Government House and Parliament House. Both institutions open their doors for special guided tours for children and families just for Children’s Day. This is a unique opportunity for children to learn about civic affairs and imagine their possibilities as future leaders.
We hope you take this opportunity to enjoy Children’s Day as a celebration of the immense potential that children hold for our future, and our role in supporting them to learn and grow. Taking your children out to enjoy kid-friendly activities will give them travel memories to last a lifetime. Happy Children’s Day!
