Homu – A Thai Take on Japanese Sweets

Thailand is a hotbed of culture, especially as a melting pot for world’s food!  Here at Centre Point, we love exploring the best restaurants and cafes across the country, especially near out hotels in Bangkok and Pattaya. If you’re visiting the Silom neighbourhood of Bangkok any time soon, we strongly suggest you take a look at Homu, a rustic Japanese dessert cafe on Charoenkrung Soi 44.

Japanese culture and cuisine is hugely popular in Thailand.  It’s not uncommon to find Japanese-inspired fashion outlets, shops, café establishments and eateries in shopping malls and major tourist areas, but this particular café is a favourite of ours as it has blended it’s modern cafe offerings with the traditional charming design and culture of Bangkok’s historical centre – Charoenkrung.

Heading to Homu

Straight away, you’ll see why so many people love flocking to Homu.  Located on a historical thoroughfare, this quaint little dessert café goes straight for the natural look - built into a brick front and with bright colours inside and out. The name of the café translates roughly into ‘house’ or ‘home’ in Japanese.  While many people will head here for the sheer look of the café alone, many visitors will stay for the treats.  The establishment is cosy, which helps to add to the homely atmosphere.  The aim here is to make you feel as though you are sampling home baking.

Sampling the Menu

Homu’s offers traditional Japanese sweets, known as wahashi, that have been adapted to the taste of it’s Thai customers and beautifully presented, as every step of the process is done by hand. At this cafe you will find tofu puddings, Hokkaido milk cakes, mochi and matcha-based desserts. Not every dish on the menu is sweet, but all delicious, so you’re sure to find something you like even if it’s your first time trying this type of food. It’s also a wonderful spot to enjoy some floral tea.  Japanese tea is some of the most delicious you will find in Thailand.  However, so is Thai tea.  Therefore, there’s a lovely blend, Homu’s signature floral tea blend, which should act as a nice change from your usual cuppas back home. If you’ve never made the trip to Japan before, it’s a great place to dip into their cuisine.

The Tastes of Silom

There are plenty of lovely culinary trips you can take in and around Silom.  We’re thrilled that so many people choose us as a home base to explore them all! Centre Point is proud to host a hotel so close to Homu, in the heart of Silom’s best-loved eateries, cafés – Charoenkrung Road.  We’re also close to the main shopping district and transport links.  Therefore, there should be more than enough in store for you if you want to head out for some retail therapy followed by a few sweet delicacies. Bangkok itself is replete in various twists on world cuisine and culture.

Homu is a great little venue which should appeal to you if you want to do a lot of globe-trotting in one trip.  Bangkok is a melting pot of little spaces like this Japanese café.  It’s ready to serve up Japanese aesthetics, both in terms of visual décor and what’s on their sumptuous menu. The café is extremely popular with locals.  It has already picked up plenty of rave reviews online.
