Loy Krathong at Chidlom

Along with Songkran, Loy Krathong is one of the most well-known Thai festivals. Based in ancient offerings to the Water Goddess, the Loy Krathong festival is celebrated by millions of Thai people and international visitors every year. It is a night filled with joyful observance — music, prayer, and of course, the iconic krathong floats that light up Thailand’s waterways.

Whether you are in town for pleasure or business, the evening of the Loy Krathong festival is a must-do. People gather in many areas, typically at the Chao Phraya river or one of the many lakes and canals in the city, to celebrate with friends and family. If you are staying with us in Thong Lo, here are our recommendations for where to celebrate the Loy Krathong festival:

We are conveniently located next to one of the best areas to experience Loy Krathong in Bangkok. The sprawling Lumpini Park is just 200 meters from Centre Point Chidlom and is a major site for Loy Krathong celebrations. Locals and visitors gather here to release their floats on the large lake at the northwest corner of the park. Street vendors also set up near the park entrance, selling food, drink, and pre-made krathongs, as well as candles, incense, and other decorations to add to your float. You will see many groups who have organized large and elaborately decorated floats, as well as Thai women dressed in traditional clothing for the occasion.

The carnival-like atmosphere at Lumpini Park is our top recommendation for Loy Krathong in the Chidlom neighborhood. Because this is a major location for celebrations, we recommend arriving early to secure your spot by the water and release your krathong. The park is large enough to accommodate festival-goers, however if you find it is too much you can always head back to Sarasin or Ratchadamri Road for dinner or some window-shopping after the event.

For a Loy Krathong celebration with activities for the entire family, head to Asiatique on Bangkok’s Chao Phraya riverfront. Asiatique is another popular destination for both locals and tourists observing Loy Krathong. The waterfront complex has dining and entertainment facilities for the whole family, including carnival rides and games, in addition to special activities that are held just for Loy Krathong. Walk along the waterfront to see traditional music and dance performances, float-making demonstrations, and an evening fireworks show.
