Loy Krathong at Pratunam

Thailand has a calendar full of festivals and observances, but none are quite like Loy Krathong.

The festival has origins in many different ancient rituals, including offerings to the Goddess of Water, harvest celebrations, and Buddhist observances. For many people, releasing a krathong (water float) symbolizes letting go of the past, or sending away negative thoughts and transgressions. Every year, the festival draws thousands of observers to lakes and waterways around Bangkok to release colorful floats and celebrate with music and prayer.

Centre Point Pratunam is a great central location for Loy Krathong visitors. We have many accessible public transport options in our neighborhood, allowing you to visit many of the most popular and iconic Loy Krathong celebrations in a short trip from the hotel. Here are the local Loy Krathong observations we recommend if you are staying with us in Pratunam:

The Golden Mount hosts major Loy Krathong celebrations every year, running for a whole week leading to the night of the festival. This means that you can enjoy Loy Krathong festivities even if you are not in Bangkok on the night of the festival itself. The Golden Mount complex transforms into a carnival-like atmosphere with food stalls, games, and attractions, great for couples or families. From there, you can climb the stairs to visit the Temple and view the city from above. We highly recommend the Golden Mount to travelers as it is one of Bangkok’s most important historical, cultural, and religious sites. Visiting during Loy Krathong is an extra treat!

Pratunam is also a short taxi or ferry away from the historic district along the Chao Phraya river, by far the most popular waterway for Loy Krathong celebrations in Bangkok. Local residents gather at various points along the river, particularly at piers, to release their krathong floats. Phra Athit Pier is one such location in the historic district.

If you plan on celebrating Loy Krathong in Bangkok’s historic district, a trip to The Maharaj Mall is also in order. The Maharaj hosts Loy Krathong festivities, including special food offerings. This is also the place to pick up a last-minute krathong in case you didn’t have time to make your own. Remember that natural, biodegradable materials — rather than plastics or styrofoam -- are the best choice for a krathong.

Loy Krathong is a ‘must-do’ if you are in Bangkok during this festival season. Don’t hesitate to ask our staff at reception for their recommendations. We hope to see you soon!
