Loy Krathong at Silom

Loy Krathong is one of the most colorful and iconic festivals in the Thai calendar. With origins in pre-Buddhist rituals and harvest celebrations, the Thai people now celebrate the holiday for many different reasons. For some, it is closely tied to Buddhist observances; for others, releasing a colorful krathong or water float on a river, lake, or canal symbolizes a spiritual release of past transgressions.

Every year, the festival draws hundreds of thousands of people who gather at waterways — lakes, canals, rivers, even swimming pools — to celebrate, pray, and release a krathong. The sight of thousands of candle-lit krathongs is breathtaking. If you are staying with us in Bangkok, it is a must-see!

Centre Point’s premier property in Bangkok’s Silom district is perfectly located for Loy Krathong celebrations. The Asiatique entertainment complex along the Chao Phraya river is one of the main areas for Loy Krathong celebrations in the city: Here you can enjoy traditional music, dance performances, krathong-making demonstrations, and an evening fireworks show.

Many businesses sponsor floats which are released from the Asiatique riverfront, which are often large and extravagantly decorated — coming here is like watching a krathong parade on the river! This is all in addition to Asiatique’s permanent riverside shopping, dining, and entertainment options, making it a perfect night out for groups and families.

As with any Loy Krathong location, we recommend arriving at Asiatique early to beat the crowds. There are plenty of attractions and areas to view the Chao Phraya river, but you will have more time to explore the many demonstrations and vendors with an early arrival. We also recommend taking a ride on the ferry to view the krathongs from above!

There are many alternative areas along the Chao Phraya where locals celebrate Loy Krathong. Many people gather at piers to release their krathong floats: Phra Athit Pier is one such location near Centre Point Silom in Bangkok’s historic district.

Our location and access to Bangkok’s historic district make it an easy choice for Loy Krathong celebrations. Whether you are celebrating at Asiatique or another site along the river, you can make an evening out in Chinatown with a stop at Maharaj Mall. The Maharaj is one of the few modern shopping complexes built in the historic district and is the perfect place for dinner or some quick shopping. If you need to pick up a last-minute krathong, the Maharaj is your place with dozens of vendors selling pre-fabricated floats.

As always, our friendly staff at Centre Point Silom are here to help you navigate Bangkok and the Loy Krathong festival. Don’t hesitate to ask at reception for directions and recommendations!
