Museum - M.R. Kukrit’s House

M.R. Kukrit’s House

There are many people all over the world that love to travel to Thailand for many different reasons. There are those that might travel for business, for the fact that it is an affordable trip to an exotic location, or you might be interested in the history and culture of the country and its people. One of the great attractions in the Childlom area is none other than M.R. Kukrit’s House.

For those who might not be aware, M.R. Kukrit’s House is a heritage museum in Bangkok that is dedicated to Kukrit Pramoj, who served as Prime Minister of Thailand during the 1970s. Pramoj is also the great-grandson of King Rama II and is a member of the Thai Royal Family. Kukrit actually built the house himself, and it remains quite a cultural milestone in Bangkok. The house is officially registered as a “Home Of An Important Person”.

Kukrit Pramoj was quite a complex individual and is known for much more than his political influence. One of the incredible aspects of Pramoj is that he was also a professor and scholar, penning dozens of plays, stories, novels, and more. The house consists of five traditional teak houses, and his collection of art and artifacts are on display, as well.

One of the main reasons that so many people visit M.R. Kukrit’s house is because of the incredible gardens and ponds that are on the property. This is great for those who might want an interlude from the busy Bangkok city life and learn more about the life of an influential figure in Thailand’s history. If you’re a fan of exotic trees, plants, fountains, lily ponds, and more - this might be quite the gem to check out. Kukrit is also a fan of sculpted miniature trees, a tradition known as “mai dat” in Thai.

There are many parallels between M.R. Kukrit’s House and The Jim Thompson House. The comparisons are natural, considering that they are both homes of influential individuals that have been converted to museums. However, it should be noted that Kukrit’s house is much more focused on traditional Thai culture and art, while Thompson’s tastes were a bit more international. This might be of interest to those who want to know more about Thai culture and history.

One notable feature of M.R. Kukrit’s House is the fact that there are artifacts such as gifts from other world leaders that are displayed there. In fact, gifts from Chinese politicians such as Deng Xiaoping and Mao Zedong can be found at M.R. Kukrit’s House. There is also a reception hall where public events were held. Some of the events held incorporated Thai Khon traditional dancing. There are also separate music and reading rooms at the house, as well.

The entry fee is affordable, and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t explore the House and find out more about Thai history and culture. You can learn more about a complex individual who appreciated both politics and art, and that combination is often rare.
