Yaowarat Chinatown - Bangkok's Vegetarian Week

If you've never heard of Thailand's famous Vegetarian Week before, there is still plenty of time and opportunity for you to get involved!  Known locally as Tesagan Gin Je, the last week of September will play host to a series of wild and beautiful celebrations.  Thailand, which is, of course, well-known for its exotic cuisine, will be hosting several big festivals up and down the country.  However, it's the Bangkok festival where you're going to want to head first.

Tesagan Gin Je is famously held with Phuket being the main base of celebration.  However, from 28th September to 7th October 2019, you'll want to stick around the capital for your pick of the most delicious treats.  If you're thinking 'that's more than a week' – so what?  It means more chance for you to sample some delightful veggie goodness while out and about across Thailand.

Vegetarian Week and Festival Origins

The famous Vegetarian Week has origins which date all the way back to the 19th century. It's said to have been carried on since Chinese opera stars found themselves consuming a vegetarian menu after succumbing to illness in Phuket.  This new diet really caught on with the locals, and since then, millions of people have been sticking to the 'Je' regime.  Many people partake in 'Je' while worshipping Taoist Gods, too.  The festival is said to encourage good fortune.

Therefore, it's unsurprising that so much of the festival takes place in Phuket.  This is where some of the most ceremonial moments take shape.  However, stick to the Bangkok festival, and you'll be able to spot all manner of Je-themed menus and events.  Simply look for a yellow flag or two!

Exploring Je in Bangkok

Downtown Bangkok is likely to be the best place to sample Je cooking and cuisine.  Throughout the 11-day festival, you’ll be able to try out intriguing new dishes, sample cooking classes, and witness spectacular shows and events.  When Thailand celebrates food, they celebrate it in style!

There is generally an itinerary for the Vegetarian Week; however, this can be subject to change. Usually, much of the worship and praise takes place early on, with further ceremonies and offerings made towards the end of the 11 days.  As with most ritual events, a strict schedule can be adhered to; however, things can change ad hoc.

You’ll want to explore the city via Tuk Tuk to really cover the whole of the Je map.  Bangkok is a sprawling city full of beautiful sights and sounds. That's why it can be challenging to get in all of the Je action on foot!

But where in Bangkok should you start when it comes to Tesagan Gin Je?  In our collective opinion, there is no better place to start tucking in than in the city’s Chinatown.

Why Head to Bangkok Chinatown?

As the Je traditions share roots with Chinese culture, it’s hardly surprising that Chinatown is a fantastic hub for the Bangkok festival. It's here where a spectacular festival hosting street cuisine unfolds during the week.

Owing to the legend of old, you’ll also get the chance to take in some Chinese opera along the way.  Of course, most of the focus will be on vegetarian cuisine.  However, don’t be surprised if you manage to take in some colourful music and dance events along the way.

Chinatown is already a bustling corner of Bangkok at the best of times!  However, the community really comes alive during the Je festival. It's certainly worth you booking your place at a nearby hotel for the end of September.  Bangkok Chinatown has been a staple community in the city since the late 18th century, and since then, their incredible market scene has helped put them on the map.

Getting Involved with the Festival

If you're planning to head out to Thailand in the last week of September, make a beeline for Je events taking place all over the country.  You should undoubtedly give Bangkok Chinatown a cursory glance!

Vegetarian Week is a huge, national celebration waiting to welcome you.  Head to Chinatown and look for the yellow flags between 28th September and 7th October!
