Celebrate Songkran Festival in Sukhumvit

While Songkran is a great time for both tourists and locals to have fun, remember that is often full of symbolic gestures. From the outside looking in, you may just see a bunch of people throwing water at each other - but remember that this water resembles purification, and renewing oneself for the new year. Every time someone throws water, it’s about washing away old sins and bringing in new luck.

There are also those who actually abide by rules once Songkran approaches. For example, in southern Thailand, it is customary for many to reflect on one’s life, the same way that Christians might spend Lent. This often involves working very little, trying to avoid hurting both people and animals, and remaining honest. While one should strive for these things often, the truth is that extra care is made to make sure that individuals are accountable on these specific days. There are many different types of parades and festivals all throughout the country to celebrate the new year. In fact, Songkran is even selectively celebrated outside of Thailand, in select areas of India, as well.

Khao San Road

If you truly want to celebrate Songkran the right way, you are going to get wet. This is definitely important to remember when it comes to which belongings you want to bring out to Songkran, and the clothing that you want to wear. Khao San Road is one of the central areas where individuals of all ages gather to soak each other in water as much as possible. There are even children eager to spray water guns, just as there are elderly women eager to be soaked in water because they believe that it is a good omen for the future year. One of the great things about Khao San Road is that it is frequented by both foreign backpackers and locals alike, which makes for an incredible international melting pot of an experience. The entire road becomes a huge water fight for hours on end!

Craft Beer

There are other ways to celebrate Songkran that don’t have to involve loud music and water fights, although there is nothing wrong with that. Let’s face it: while some travel to Thailand to have the wildest time possible, others might be there on a romantic honeymoon or simply wanting to explore some of the most interesting places that they can find, whether they are museums, restaurants, bars, clubs, or otherwise - but want to do it in relative peace. For people who might prefer a quiet craft beer over a loud and messy water fight - one great option to consider is the Craft 23 Songkran Festival, at the bar Craft 23, which is a water-free and pet-friendly good time where partygoers can still enjoy some music, without the tourist insanity that often accompanies Songkran Festival. You can enjoy dozens of craft beers, and the parking lot will even feature ping pong tables, Beer Pong, and beach balls, for some good old family fun!

Sukhumvit is home to some of Bangkok’s most incredible restaurants, bars, and clubs, so there is no shortage of things to do during Songkran, whether you are thinking of spending all night at Khao San Road or simply want to enjoy your experience at your hotel. For those who are staying at Centre Point Hotel Sukhumvit, and want to enjoy Songkran at the hotel itself, no problem! You can treat yourself to a complimentary fruit smoothie, and, of course, sprinkle water onto a Buddha image for good luck. Here’s to a happy New Year!
