Happy New Year – and Happy New Decade! 2020 is set to be a big year for millions of people all over the world. It’s the start of a new decade, a leap year and the Chinese Year of the Rat. It is the fourth phase of the Chinese philosophy of wuxing, which means it the year of the Metal Rat, which in Taoism, attributes of Metal are considered to be strength, persistence and rigidity.
The Chinese zodiac assigns different animals and their attributes to each year in a repeating 12-year cycle. The last time we experienced a Year of the Rat took place in 2008, and before then, 1996. Those born in these years are considered to be born in the Year of the Rat, and therefore take on the attributes of the rat, which are considered below.
Rats are spry, quick to act, and are thought to have plenty of spirit. It is said that anyone born in the Year of the Rat will benefit from adaptable personalities, along with being smart, cautious and cheerful. They will also have lucky colours in gold, blue and green, and unlucky numbers in 5 and 9. Lucky numbers include 2 and 3 ,
A rat year signifies a great occasion to be sociable and affable. Rats are, of course, very friendly animals. Those born in the Year of the Rat are said to be particularly compatible with those born in the Year of the Ox, Dragon or Monkey, and compatible jobs include artist, author, doctor and teacher.
