Count Down to the New Year in Bangkok

2019 is just around the corner! Life in Bangkok is as busy and as bustling as ever during the holidays, which makes it an ideal seasonal travel destination. Whether it is business or pleasure that brings you to Thailand, we encourage you to take advantage of New Year’s events.

Here are our recommendations for activities as we count down to the New Year 2019 in Bangkok:

The “Times Square” of Bangkok

Every year, thousands of people gather for the New Year’s countdown outside of Central World mall in Bangkok’s Chidlom neighborhood. Similar to the famous New Year celebration in Times Square, revelers count down together and enjoy a romantic fireworks show at the strike of midnight. Central World mall also organizes a beer garden and food stalls in the surrounding area so that you can stay for the evening and keep going into the new year.

The Central World celebration is centrally located with easy access via the Chit Lom BTS (skytrain) station. On New Year’s Eve, the skytrain runs on special hours after midnight, which will allow you to travel to the celebration and leave for an after-party or just some well-needed rest!

Bangkok hosts several spectacular fireworks displays that can be viewed from different neighborhoods around the city. The largest and most well-attended fireworks display is held at Asiatique, a river-side entertainment and shopping complex near Bangkok’s historic district. Arrive early to enjoy the night market, a stroll along the riverfront, dinner, music, dancing, and more.

You can also find other areas along the Chao Phraya river to view the fireworks display — the river winds through Bangkok’s historic, business, and residential districts. One of our favorite riverside restaurants, The Deck by the River, is located in plain view of the Chao Phraya fireworks show across from Wat Arun.

As mentioned before, the Central World celebration also includes a fireworks display visible at street level for the many people who gather to celebrate. Many organizations and businesses, including riverside hotels, put on smaller fireworks displays. No matter where you go in Bangkok, you will find celebrations and a festive atmosphere on New Year’s Eve!

River cruises

River cruises are popular year-round on the scenic Chao Phraya, but many travelers save their dates for a New Year’s Eve cruise. Many cruise operators have special dinners or midnight cruises just for this occasion, offering spectacular views of the midnight fireworks show from the river.

Every operator has their own schedules and offerings for these special cruises, most including dinner, drinks, live music, dancing, and a view of the NYE fireworks. A few of the top river cruise companies in Bangkok include:

- Chao Phraya Princess

- Apsara Cruise

- Loy Nava

Book early so that you don’t miss out on this unique experience — these are some of the most popular cruises of the year!

Rooftop Dining

A more intimate option for New Year’s Eve would be one of Bangkok’s many rooftop restaurants and bars. Have a romantic dinner or drinks as you reflect on the year past and the year ahead. Stay for the countdown to midnight for spectacular panorama views of the city, including fireworks displays from a totally new perspective!
