Jok Prince: Porridge Perfection

Jok Prince: Perfect Porridge

When you think of porridge, you likely think of oats and milk, as well as cold mornings!  If you’re new to Thailand or have yet to explore the culinary culture, you may not have come across congee before.  Congee is a traditional Thai recipe which is hugely popular in Bangkok.  If you think you’ve had your fill of porridge in your country, then you haven’t counted on Jok Prince mixing things up for you!

Silom’s Smoky Delights

Based in the heart of downtown Silom, Jok Prince is a hugely popular shop and eatery. They've moved location over the years; however, they are continuing to grow thanks to increasing recognition.

In fact, Prince is recognised as one of Bangkok's finest restaurants in the official Michelin Guide. It's always worth reading what Michelin has to say.  They are regarded as the leading name in restaurant reviews the world over.

This particular eatery specialises in – of course – porridge.  In fact, Jok is another word for the dish.  It’s still a popular comfort food and breakfast dish, however, it’s not the sweet, sugary oat porridge you’d find elsewhere.  Congee is a traditionally savoury treat, and it’s served with a number of smoky ingredients.

A Unique Porridge Sensation

The porridge served here is more than just savoury.  For egg lovers, you’ll be in heaven.  The traditional congee served here typically consists of pork balls (minced up), and a selection of eggs.  More often than not, you’ll be served a blend with a century egg and a raw egg to boot.

The smoky flavour that the Michelin Guide is so keen to celebrate is referred to locally as 'wok hei', and it's quite unique.  Pork and egg broth may not be to everyone's tastes, but if you are willing to give the porridge at least here a try, you may end up finding a new favourite concoction.  Just don't bank on finding anywhere else to serve you up the same dish quite as well!

The restaurant has expanded due to popularity.  Over the years, the porridge brand has been open only as a simple stall.  However, their expansion has led to visitors now being able to dine in, with chairs and tables set out for patrons to relax and tuck in at their leisure.

Sensational Silom

Silom is just one side of Bangkok which is home to miles of traditional cuisine and interesting sights.  Bangkok itself is a genuinely magnificent city, and the Prince of porridge will be one of hundreds of fantastic eateries you can pop into while touring around.  We certainly recommend you pop in for a quick sample of the menu if you’re in the area.

Silom itself is pretty straightforward to navigate.  Thanks to recent extensions made to the subway system in Bangkok, locals and tourists can now get around and connect from many areas of the city.

We offer a Centre Point hotel location in Silom itself.  It is one of our most popular hotels, and you can easily find us from public transit, and what’s more, if you’d like to explore restaurants such as Jok Prince, you can. You'll find us in the vicinity of several popular haunts with locals and tourists alike.

We're proud to be so close to so much of the authentic action in Silom (Centre Point Hotel Silom is located on Chaorenkrung Road, the heart of historical Bangkok). We have elsewhere in Thailand covered, too.  If you're trekking through Silom or elsewhere in Bangkok, be sure to look for your nearest Centre Point to bed down for the night.

Thailand is home to some truly unique cuisine.  However, you’re going to need to dig deep to find flavours you’ve never tried before.

There's no doubt that Jok Prince offers diners an incredible taste sensation.  Those who love the smokiness of their dishes return again and again. What's more, a Michelin thumbs up is never something to frown about.  Head on down to Silom and pull up a chair to try some tasty Thai porridge!
