Loy Krathong at Pattaya

Loy Krathong is a beloved festival celebrated throughout Thailand. Thought to be rooted in ancient offerings to water spirits, the modern-day festival is famous for the elaborately decorated floats (krathongs) that are released onto rivers, lakes, and other waterways. The krathongs are frequently made of banana tree stalks, folded leaves, and flowers. Krathongs may also include incense or coins as offerings. Many people also choose to light their krathong with a candle, creating a dazzling scene of lights as thousands of krathongs float along the water.

If you are staying in Pattaya during the Loy Krathong festival, you have several options for observing the holiday on the Thai seaboard. Centre Point’s location in central Pattaya close to several scenic locations for celebrating Loy Krathong:

Pattaya Beach is the most popular destination for Loy Krathong celebrations in the city, and just a few minutes’ transfer from the city center. Vendors and festival-goers gather along the beachside in a carnival-like atmosphere, with food, dance, music, fireworks, and more. Arrive early with a towel or folding chairs and grab a spot to enjoy the festivities as the night unfolds. If you’ve forgotten to make or purchase a float in advance, you can buy one from the vendors at the beach. Wade into the water to release your float so that it is carried out into the ocean, rather than being swept back in by the tide!

Another excellent option is Jomtien beach, just a few kilometers south of Pattaya city. Although you will need to organize transportation such as a taxi or a car hire out of the city, Jomtien beach is a lovely destination which typically draws smaller crowds than Pattaya beach. The beach itself is 6 kilometers long, plenty of space for Loy Krathong observers to find a spot to release their float into the ocean.

A third option is Lake Mabprachan, which is a popular destination for locals and visitors staying in the eastern part of Pattaya city. The lake has a large shoreline with many areas to release krathongs. We recommend making or purchasing your krathong before heading to the lake. You may find vendors selling krathongs and krathong materials all around the city, including on Pattaya’s famous walking street.

Loy Krathong is a special celebration in Thailand. The lively atmosphere and the sight of thousands of lights on the ocean leaves an impression on the many travelers who seek out this festival. We hope you will take time during your stay in Pattaya to experience Loy Krathong with us!
