One of the incredible things about Songkran is that it is a multi-layered holiday. While there are many locals that might enjoy a quiet time with the family at home, there are also many people out on the street, engaging in water fights and incredible festivals. While there is no one great way to celebrate the Thai Traditional New Year (Songkran), there are definitely certain places that are better to celebrate it than others.
There are many that believe that Thong Lo (which translates into “molten gold”) is the “hippest” and “classiest” neighborhood in Bangkok in terms of nightlife. For a time of celebration, what other place is best to frequent? Here are some of the incredible things to do in Thong-Lo during Songkran. One important aspect to remember is that Thong-Lo might be considerably more expensive than other neighborhoods, for those who are traveling on a budget. It is important to remember that many businesses are closed during this time, regardless, if you planned on visiting to either patronize a business, or network with various businesses.
Siam Songkran Music Festival
What’s a celebration without music? The Siam Songkran Music Festival has featured some incredible music artists throughout the years, and 2019 is no different. This year, the festival takes place at one of Bangkok’s most famous venues, the Show DC Oasis Arena. For those who are wondering who is performing - the festival features heavy-hitters such as Grammy-award winning DJ Afrojack, and Yellow Claw, two Dutch DJs that have made a name for themselves for their genre-bending anthems. The festival is a four-day fiesta that focuses on EDM music, and might be the rave that you are looking for if you want a high-energy way to ring in the new year.
S20 Festival
Believe it or not, given how much Songkran is growing, that is not the only big music festival in town - as S20 Festival hopes to steal the stage nearby at Live Park. This festival lasts only 3 days, but each day is headlined by an internationally-known DJ. On April 13th, Fatboy Slim takes the stage - a man who holds the Guiness Book of World Records for most top 40 hits under different names, and also celebrates two decades of success in the industry. April 14th belongs to Tiesto, who many consider to be the actual “godfather of EDM”. The last day, April 15th, belongs to Steve Aoki, a producer/DJ/music executive that is still one of the highest-paid DJs in the world.
Game Over Lounge
Songkran is an incredible experience, but not everyone is into EDM music, water fights, or constant noise. You might be traveling with friends who appreciate a more low-key experience, and Game Over Lounge offers just that. It should be noted that this is a bit of “America in Thailand”, so if you are looking for a true Thai cultural experience - this isn’t it. However, the Game Over Lounge can certainly offer a fun time, for those who are into a good time over juicy burgers and beer pong. If you happen to want to catch a sports game during Songkran Festival - this is the place that might be streaming it. Either way, the bar is quite the popular spot, for those who are into everything from billiards to computer games, and more.
The Hive
Are you in Bangkok not to get hosed down and ruin your best clothes, but simply looking to get some work done? For those who want to be a bit more productive during Songkran Festival, the move might be to head over to The Hive. You might run into like-minded entrepreneurs at this four-story coworking space that also features a cafe lounge, terrace, and a rooftop bar, as well. For those who want to spend Songkran treating themselves, there is even a spa on the first floor!
Thong Lor is one of Bangkok’s trendiest neighborhoods, and with the range of options and activities - it’s easy to see why. There is so much to do during Songkran, and Thong Lor offers some of the best that Bangkok has to offer, whether you want to jump right into the festivities or opt for something different. For those who are staying at Centre Point Thong Lor, visitors can sprinkle water on a Buddha image for good luck, as well.
